Odometer check: how to review a used car’s mileage

A low number on the dashboard needs supporting evidence. Compare dated readings and investigate anything that does not fit.

RegoLens · Updated 29 October 2026

Create a dated mileage timeline

Ask for the service book and available repair or inspection invoices. Put each dated reading in order, and note where it came from. Compare the latest documentary reading with the dashboard and the date of the advertisement.

Use the same unit throughout. If an imported record uses miles, label it clearly before comparing it with kilometre readings. Do not quietly treat the two units as equal.

Check available government readings

Service NSW says its free registration check can show the three most recent yearly odometer readings where available. The enquiry uses the NSW registration plate and applies to vehicles previously or currently registered in NSW.

Start with the official registration-check directory for the relevant jurisdiction. Do not assume another state publishes the same mileage information or that an unavailable reading means zero kilometres.

Investigate an unexplained difference

A later reading lower than an earlier one deserves follow-up. Ask for the original document and an explanation, such as evidence relating to an instrument replacement or a recording mistake. A plausible story is not the same as supporting paperwork.

For example, an invoice showing 145,000 km followed by an advertisement showing 95,000 km leaves a specific question to resolve. Give the documents to an independent inspector and clarify the discrepancy before committing to the purchase.

Know the limits of a history report

The PPSR vehicle search does not supply odometer readings. RegoLens does not promise an odometer history in its A$10 product. A result with no registered security interest therefore does not validate the dashboard mileage.

Wear on seats, pedals or controls can prompt questions, but cannot measure the car’s true kilometres. Combine documents with an independent inspection; do not rely on appearance alone.
