A rego check and a history check answer different questions

A current registration is useful information. It does not, by itself, establish that a vehicle has no recorded finance or write-off concerns.

Use the registration check for registration questions

A transport authority’s enquiry is the place to check the registration details it makes available. For example, NSW offers a free online registration check using a NSW plate number. Fields and coverage differ between states.

Use the report for its stated record checks

A RegoLens paid report brings together the PPSR search and available vehicle findings. It is a different step from the initial rego-based vehicle identification. The initial lookup should not be described as a full finance clearance.

Keep three questions on your checklist

  • Registration: what does the transport authority show?
  • Records: what does the vehicle search show for the correct VIN?
  • Condition: what does an independent inspection reveal?

Follow up when details differ

If the plate lookup, paperwork and vehicle do not match, stop and clarify the discrepancy. Changing plates, incomplete data or a typing error can require further checking; none should be resolved by guessing the identifier.

Keep a note of when you checked each source. A screenshot of an expiry date and an original PPSR certificate are different documents for different purposes, so save them with clear labels.

General buyer information, not advice about your individual transaction. A vehicle history report does not replace a mechanical inspection.
