A practical checklist for buying a car privately

Work through the checks before the money changes hands. A private sale needs more than a convincing advertisement.

Before the meeting

Ask for the plate, registration state, full VIN and available service records. Write down what the seller says about damage, repairs and finance so you can compare those statements with the inspection and documents.

At the vehicle

  • Match the physical VIN with the paperwork.
  • Ask for evidence that the person selling is entitled to sell.
  • Review service records and arrange an independent mechanical inspection.
  • Check registration through the appropriate transport authority.

Before payment

Review a current PPSR certificate for the correct identifier and resolve recorded interests or unclear findings. Confirm the agreed price and the identity of the payee. Do not treat urgency from the seller as a reason to skip a check.

Make a short list of unresolved questions. If you cannot cross them off with reliable evidence, delay the decision instead of letting an attractive price answer them for you.

At handover

Keep the signed sale paperwork, payment evidence, certificate, inspection report and keys together. Check your state’s registration-transfer process and deadlines. A vehicle report does not complete the transfer for you.

NSW Government guidance explains that private sales and licensed-dealer sales have different protections. For a dispute or uncertainty about your rights, seek advice for the actual transaction and jurisdiction.

General buyer information, not advice about your individual transaction. A vehicle history report does not replace a mechanical inspection.
