Buyer guide

When should you run a PPSR check?

Use a current search when making the final purchase decision. An earlier certificate remains a record of the earlier search.

Search close to the transaction

The PPSR recommends searching on the day of purchase or the day before. Its buyer guidance explains the conditions and exceptions that can affect protection. A report obtained early in your shopping process should not automatically be treated as current at settlement.

Plan the final checks together

Set aside time to match the VIN, read the certificate and resolve questions before releasing money. If the seller changes the proposed handover date, revisit whether the search is still appropriate for that timing.

For example, a report bought while shortlisting on Monday is useful for that decision. If you finally buy the car the following week, treat the final purchase as a separate decision requiring current information.

Keep your evidence organised

Save the certificate with the sale documents and payment record. Note which report you relied on and when the transaction occurred. For advice about protection in a particular situation, use the official guidance or seek a qualified adviser.
